Joe leads teams of researchers on river expeditions that explore the biodiversity of some of Africa’s most wild and remote rivers. These expeditions cover the entire length of the river, can last from weeks to months, find new species and often are the first time the rivers have ever been fully explored. Joe has joined us from various river expeditions and tide pooling adventures from California to Gabon to Mongolia. He is currently working with the Wild Bird Foundation of America on the Wilderness Project to survey the great rivers in Africa, including the Zambezi, Congo and Nile, plus their major tributaries. He’s an ichthyologist, freshwater ecologist, and an African river explorer. As a National Geographic explorer he studied volcanic crater lakes in Cameroon and completed the first mega transect of Gabon’s Ogooue River in over 100 years, one of Africa’s last wild rivers.
