Andrew is a conservation biologist working to save New Zealand’s most threatened birds. He leads the science behind recovery programs for the kākāpō—the world’s heaviest and only flightless parrot—and takahē, the world’s heaviest rail. These programs have used bold, innovative methods to monitor health, mating and nesting in the wild, and use networked smart feeding stations ensure individuals reach optimal breeding weights, all to bring both species back from the brink of extinction. Formerly an astrophysicist, he’s pioneering techniques and technologies that can transform conservation globally, ensuring that species recovery becomes faster, smarter, and more sustainable for generations to come.
