Join us live from the São Francisco River in Brazil as we hop aboard a fleet of river boats to meet a group of scientists exploring the river ecosystem and community in a big way! The São Francisco River Scientific Expedition is the biggest Brazilian scientific expedition of its kind, perhaps, in all of South America!
In this sixth edition, for 10 days, 102 participants of different specialities, such as scientists of 32 research areas, dentists, doctors, underwater archaeologists and historians, educators, environmentalists, and others, will travel together and live aboard 4 river boats, equipped with science labs.
The routine starts at 5 AM when biologists collect water samples, fish and other organisms to be examined in the onboard labs, using ultrasound and other techniques. Other teams leave the boats and travel inland to visit traditional, indigenous and afro descendant communities to give social medical care, measure the environmental impact of agribusiness in the region, and other human interference. At the end of the day, all specialists contribute to the big picture of river health with their specific studies, to have a complete analysis of this region of Brazil, focusing primarily in improving the lives of the riverside communities.
This model of scientific expedition is already being replicated in other areas of Brazil.
