Meet the bluebuck, a shimmering blue antelope from South Africa and the focus of Colossal’s sixth de-extinction target. More than 200 years ago, the species disappeared before much of the world ever knew it existed, and became the first large African mammal driven to extinction in recorded history.
On October 6th, join Colossal Chief Biology Officer Andrew Pask, Ph.D for a live webinar taking students behind the history of the bluebuck and how genetics and reproductive technologies could help bring back the species. Students will also have the chance to ask their questions during a live Q&A.
To prepare, classrooms are invited to watch a 25-minute video Bluebuck: The Lost Blue Antelope of Africa, and complete the accompanying free classroom activities. Together, these materials introduce students to the bluebuck’s history and ecological role, the factors that led to its extinction, and what its story means for conservation today.
