Hero Animals and How to Draw Them

In Africa, there is a special species of mammal called the pouched rat. Despite their adorable appearance, they are the hardest of hardcore, trained to look for bombs and disease and save people in the process.

Join Dr. Danielle Lee, a field biologist, and Liz Wahid, a scientific illustrator, to learn not only about their interesting biology and behavior, but how to draw them. A virtual event where the students are able to take home their learning with them!

Mammals and Birds: Not So Different After All?

If you ask someone to think of a mammal, they are very likely to think of an animal that exists for all of its life on the ground. However, mammals have very interesting similarities to birds, many of which are little known.

Join Julian Nesbitt and Dr. Cesar Estien, two field biologists, and hear stories of mammals and their connection to their much, much older cousins: the birds.

African Wildlife Filmmakers Showcase
For too long, filmmaking about wildlife in Africa has been dominated by filmmakers from the Global North. Fortunately, there is now a hopeful and exciting boom in African professionals creating films about their local wildlife. Join us as we highlight the incredible work and diverse career paths of talented African filmmakers whose films focus on wildlife.

Hosted by Dr. Christine Wilkinson

Dr. Christine Wilkinson is a conservation scientist, science communicator, and National Geographic Explorer based at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and the California Academy of Sciences. Her work in California and Kenya combines animal behavior and community engagement to understand how people and wildlife (like spotted hyenas, coyotes, and more) share landscapes and how we might coexist in ways that center environmental and social justice.

Edna Bonareri

Edna is a Kenyan born sound recordist with over a decade of experience across documentary, wildlife, and feature productions. Her work has taken her into some of the most demanding and remote filming environments, where she captures intimate, authentic sound that brings visual stories to life. Her notable wildlife credits include the Emmy-nominated Secrets of the Elephants, The Last Animal, Born Wild: The Next Generation, and the recently released Pride of Samburu, alongside numerous other international productions.

Hans Cosmas Ngoteya

Hans is a wildlife and conservation storyteller from Tanzania, committed to effecting positive change through his work. As a co-founder of Ngoteya Wild, he has directed award-winning documentaries that showcase both the significance and beauty of nature. He also established the Tanzania Wildlife Media Association (TaWiMA), which supports and mentors emerging wildlife storytellers. In 2023, Hans was honoured with the Jackson Wild Rising Star Award in recognition of his substantial contributions to conservation and efforts in promoting harmonious coexistence between communities and wildlife.

Clement Kiragu

Clement is a Kenyan wildlife photographer, filmmaker, and National Geographic Explorer whose work has contributed to major natural history productions for National Geographic, the BBC Natural History Unit, BBC One, PBS Nature, and the National Geographic Museum of Exploration. Recently, he spent 15 months with the BBC Natural History Unit on National Geographic series Africa: Earth’s Wild Home, filming unique animal behaviours and adaptations in some of Africa’s wildest and most remote places. Kiragu is the founder of ClementWild Productions, a Kenya-based production company supporting international broadcasters and filmmakers.

Antony Mwangi Njoroge

Antony is a Kenyan filmmaker, cinematographer, and environmental storyteller based in Nairobi. He is the Director of Unplug Africa Limited, a production company focused on stories that connect people, culture, conservation, and social change. His work spans documentary, fiction, television, and international productions, with collaborations including BBC, Al Jazeera, MultiChoice, and National Geographic. Antony has directed and produced award winning conservation stories including If Turtle Could Talk and The Caretakers, and his work explores biodiversity, climate, science, African identity, and social change.
