Port au Choix National Historic Site, located on the west coast of the island portion of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, lies on a small peninsula along the much larger Great Northern Peninsula. In addition to having 6000 years of known human history, this peninsula was once part of an ancient seafloor and today is a globally unique habitat whose landscape holds the scarcest and tiniest of arctic- alpine plants to the largest of animals.
Upon this limestone landscape, threatened species like the Woodland Caribou live all year round and fragile plants like the Fernald’s Braya- found nowhere else- call this place home. So, come join Parks Canada along with partners Intervale and The Stewardship of Municipalities to see how they all work together tirelessly to protect and conserve this unique and resilient ecosystem and how you too can play your part in preserving the beauty and the barrens!
