SUMMARY:Hop Aboard Greenpeace's Deep Arctic Expedition
DESCRIPTION:Greenpeace is about to depart on a month-long mission to the Arctic deep-sea. The Deep Arctic Expedition brings together world-leading scientists to explore Arctic seamounts and hydrothermal vent fields – ecosystems so remote they remain largely a mystery to humanity. \nJoin us onboard their specially equipped research vessel and meet some of the scientists\, check out some of the gear they’re using\,  and see what incredible life they’re finding along the Arctic Mid Ocean Arctic Ridge– one of Earth’s least known wildernesses to depths of up to 3000 meters. \nThe area of the expedition was opened for deep sea mining by the Norwegian government in 2024\, but was halted last year after protests from environmental organisations\, scientists and the green opposition parties in Norway. Deep sea mining would\, according to many scientists\, cause irreversible damage to vulnerable deep-sea ecosystems\, including the destruction of habitats\, and possibly species extinction. The expedition will focus on exploring seamounts\, which are biodiversity hotspots in the deep sea\, and hydrothermal vent fields – underwater volcanic hot springs that support life in total darkness.

SUMMARY:Beauty and the Barrens
DESCRIPTION:Port au Choix National Historic Site\, located on the west coast of the island portion of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador\, lies on a small peninsula along the much larger Great Northern Peninsula. In addition to having 6000 years of known human history\, this peninsula was once part of an ancient seafloor and today is a globally unique habitat whose landscape holds the scarcest and tiniest of arctic- alpine plants to the largest of animals.\n\nUpon this limestone landscape\, threatened species like the Woodland Caribou live all year round and fragile plants like the Fernald’s Braya- found nowhere else- call this place home. So\, come join Parks Canada along with partners Intervale and The Stewardship of Municipalities to see how they all work together tirelessly to protect and conserve this unique and resilient ecosystem and how you too can play your part in preserving the beauty and the barrens!

SUMMARY:Pioneers of the Possible: Wildlife Photographer Michelle Valberg
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of and in the spirit of the recently launched Jane Goodall Institute of Canada’s Hike for Hope – we are thrilled to welcome one of Canada’s most extraordinary visual storytellers to Pioneers of the Possible. Join us Tuesday\, May 19th at 11am PST / 2pm EST for a conversation with Michelle Valberg\, C.M. \nMichelle Valberg is one of Canada’s most celebrated wildlife and nature photographers — a four-decade career that has taken her across all seven continents and into some of the wildest\, most sacred places on Earth. A recipient of the Order of Canada\, Nikon Ambassador\, and Photographer-in-Residence for Canadian Geographic\, Michelle creates images that do more than document the natural world. They invite us to feel it. From spirit bears in the Great Bear Rainforest to polar bears in the Arctic\, her photography captures the fragile beauty\, the emotional truth\, and the urgent need for connection between humans and the wild places that sustain us all. \nHer work has graced magazine covers\, Canadian coins and postage stamps\, public art installations\, and galleries worldwide. She is a Fellow and Board of Governors member of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society\, a member of The Explorers Club in New York City\, Gold medal winner at the 2026 World Photographic Cup in Iceland – one of the most prestigious international competitions in professional photography. Her accolades include the Wildlife Photographer gold medal at the 2022 World Photographic Cup\, the Julia Margaret Cameron Award for Women Photographers\, and the Louie Kamookak Medal for making Canada’s geography better known to Canadians and the world. \nBeyond the lens\, Michelle is a force for community and conservation. As founder of Project North\, she delivered over $2 million in sporting equipment to youth in more than 40 Arctic communities over 17 years — a legacy of generosity and connection that speaks to who she is as much as her photography does. She leads immersive workshops and expeditions around the world\, from the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary to Churchill’s polar bear habitats\, mentoring photographers of all levels to find their vision\, elevate their craft\, and tell stories that matter. \nAt the heart of Michelle’s work is a truth that resonates deeply with the spirit of this series: photography is more than an image. It is emotion\, connection\, and a way to give voice to the wild places and species that need us most. We can’t wait to share this conversation with you.

SUMMARY:Tagging Migratory Birds with the Wings of Survival Expedition
DESCRIPTION:In January 2026\, our Wings of Survival team traveled to Chiloé Island in Chilean Patagonia and successfully equipped five whimbrels\, a shorebird species that commits to one of the longest migrations in the animal kingdom\, with GPS tags. These tiny ‘backpacks’ allow us to live-track these five individuals and if all goes well\, they will arrive in their breeding grounds in Alaska this May\, before they once again return to South America in July. For the first time ever\, two humans will emulate the daring journeys of a long-distance migratory bird species along a global flight path\, to offer a unique perspective into one of nature’s greatest spectacles.

SUMMARY:Insect Societies of the World
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that some insects live in giant cities with millions of residents? Insect colonies are some of the most cooperative and complex societies on Earth! \nJoin Dr Juliet Turner from the University of Oxford to explore the incredible world of social insects. She studies how insects have evolved to work together\, each doing different jobs. You’ll discover how ant colonies function a lot like human societies\, with queens\, food collectors\, cleaners\, and soldiers who fearlessly defend the nest. \nYou will also learn about some of the weirdest insect social adaptations\, including defensive aphid grandmothers\, ants with doors for heads\, and thrips that act as nurses. \nAlong the way\, Dr Turner will share stories from her adventures studying insects around the world\, including in the remote rainforests of Papua New Guinea.
