Insect Societies of the World

Description

Insect Societies of the World

Did you know that some insects live in giant cities with millions of residents? Insect colonies are some of the most cooperative and complex societies on Earth!

Join Dr Juliet Turner from the University of Oxford to explore the incredible world of social insects. She studies how insects have evolved to work together, each doing different jobs. You’ll discover how ant colonies function a lot like human societies, with queens, food collectors, cleaners, and soldiers who fearlessly defend the nest.

You will also learn about some of the weirdest insect social adaptations, including defensive aphid grandmothers, ants with doors for heads, and thrips that act as nurses.

Along the way, Dr Turner will share stories from her adventures studying insects around the world, including in the remote rainforests of Papua New Guinea.
