Head to the largest research station in Antarctica, McMurdo Station! Join Dr. Xinzhao Chu and the team from the University of Colorado Boulder as they use lidar (Light Detection And Ranging) instruments — powerful lasers which when shot into the sky can measure properties of the small amount of atmosphere that exists more than 60 miles above Earth’s surface.

Dig Deeper: The atmosphere that protects our planet is like the thin skin of an apple. There are 5 layers, what are they and how thick is each one?
